BLM Opens Trail at Headwaters Forest Reserve

The Bureau of Land Management has opened the South Side Trail, a winding route that parallels the Elk River in the Headwaters Forest Reserve, located near Arcata, California.

The trail, open during summer and fall, runs next to the Elk River Trail beginning at the Elk River Trailhead. The 1.6-mile path is accessible via a seasonal bridge over the river. BLM reports it is narrow and winding and includes several moderate climbs.

“The trail is limited to hikers only to conserve the ecological integrity of the area,” said Jennifer Wheeler, assistant field manager for the BLM Arcata Field Office. “Bike riders and those hiking with their dogs can experience the Reserve on the main Elk River Trail.”

In other news, those heading to Headwaters Forest Reserve on Aug. 20 can participate in an hour-long writing workshop at 1 p.m. in the Headwaters Education Center. For more information, contact the Arcata Field Office at 707-825-2300.
