Pitch articles, send photos, become a regular contributor or send us a letter!
We are currently accepting article and photo submissions (paid and unpaid) for sections in the print and digital versions of the magazine. We are also seeking regular contributors, so please note if you'd be a fit for a particular section. Reader letters are also welcomed and encouraged. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with a brief pitch or query, or for additional information.
Without exception, features in American West must be about travel experiences in one or more of the states in our region. We publish mainly well-reported articles, though occasionally publish first-person essays. The goal is to expose readers to unique people, places and experiences.
Rates at this time are 10 cents per word. Word count should be no more than 2,500. Accompanying photos are required with features. American West pays on publication.
Best of the West
Best of the West is all reader-submitted content. Send us your best poems, short stories and other written material focused on the American West (1,000 words maximum). You can also send in photos and other art.
News Around the West
This section will keep readers informed of the stuff they need to know to travel around the West – from National Park trail closures to original reports on California gas prices. We’ll also cover big stories on important topics that define the region like water issues, wildfires and the like, but we’ll leave it to great publications like High Country News to cover these in depth.
Music, Musings & More
On the music front, we’ll feature an Album of the Month focusing on music new and old from artists in the West. This section will also have book and film reviews, commentary and more. Think of it as one part arts & culture, one part opinions from voices around the West.
