Shadehill State Recreation Area

Right near the North Dakota-South Dakota border, Shadehill State Recreation Area is on the Shadehill Reservoir, one of western South Dakota’s few large lakes. It’s a great spot to connect with nature and have a relaxing day.

So why not stay awhile? The fees are $8 per vehicle per day, or you can get an annual pass for $36, which covers all South Dakota state park lands. There are 85 campsites with seven camping cabins and a group lodge. Campsites are $26 per night.

The reservoir is a one-stop-shop for all things water related. There are great areas for swimming, wakeboarding, water skiing, tubing and more. Boat and jet ski rentals are available.

Across the reservoir, you’ll find the Hugh Glass Recreation Area, with a nearby memorial of the same name, recognizing the Western adventurer.

Wherever you camp in the area, be sure to take a walk to Ketterlins Point, a great place to take in the lake.
