Our well-reported, in-depth features will be the core of the magazine. With the launch of the print publication in January 2022, we will run features every 3-4 weeks on this website, including one digital exclusive per issue. There will also be two print exclusives in every magazine.
Best of the West + Reader Poll
Best of the West is all about you, our readers. It will feature reader-submitted photos, poems, stories and other art made in or about the West. Stay tuned for submission calls! The Best of the West Reader Poll will ask about your favorite places (i.e. "Best of the West") and will also act as feedback for what you want to see covered in the magazine.
Trip of the Month
Each issue, we'll feature three annotated maps that reflect different kinds of trips and lengths. For example, a long trek on part of the John Muir Trail or a road trip through Montana or a horseback journey near Boise, Idaho. Print subscribers will get early access to this section (our January/Winter issue, for example, will have Trip of the Month maps for January, February and March).
News Around the West
American West will be your one-stop-shop for regional travel news – from National Park trail closures to original reports on California gas prices. While American West's mission is to explore the natural and cultural beauty of this great region, it's not our goal to sugarcoat or outright ignore major issues that impact daily life and travel. We think it's important to have a clear picture of the West – and that means the whole picture. So we'll include occasional news items on water issues, wildfires and the like, but we'll leave it to great publications like High Country News to cover such topics in depth.
Music, Musings & More
This section will feature an Album of the Month with a focus on music new and old from artists in the West. It will also have book and film reviews, commentary and more. Think of it as one part arts & culture, one part opinions from voices around the West.
